A high level of uric acid in the blood is one of the main causes of gout and, in fewer cases, kidney failure.
This problem can result from either decreased production of uric acid in the body or less excretion of it through kidneys. When the kidneys don’t eliminate the excess uric acid, it gets deposited in the form of uric acid crystals in the joints. This leads to gouty arthritis and also kidney stones or renal failure.
What are the Normal Uric Acid levels?
- For Men: – 3.4 – 7.0 mg/dL
- For Women: – 2.4 – 6.0 mg/dL
Note: – These values can vary at different labs.
What Factors raises the Level of Uric Acid?
Some of the common causes of uric acid include a diet high in purines, excess alcohol consumption, obesity, underactive thyroid, and other diseases. Apart from this, fasting and crash dieting may raise the uric acid levels on a temporary basis.
How to control High Uric Acid Levels?
There are some tips and natural remedies which can help to reduce and control high uric acid levels. In this article, I’m sharing with you a list of easy-to-do remedies for managing uric acid levels.
Let’s begin!
Apple Cider Vinegar :
Apple cider vinegar is a natural cleanser and detoxifier and helps to remove wastes like uric acid from the body. It is helpful in maintaining the alkaline-acid balance in the body.
How to use it?
To a glass of water add one teaspoon of raw, organic and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. Drink this mixture for two-three times in a day. Don’t take apple cider vinegar in excess because it can decrease the level of potassium in the body.
Baking Soda :
This is another remedy which you can try at home to control uric acid level and reduce gout pains. This is because baking soda helps to maintain the natural alkaline balance in the body. In addition to this, baking soda makes the uric acid excretion more convenient.
What you have to do?
Just mix one-half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Drink one to two glasses of this solution in routine for two weeks. However, people suffering from high blood pressure should not follow this.
Olive Oil :
Most of the vegetable oils turn into rancid fats when heated or processed. This rancid fat destroys the essential vitamin E of the body, which is required for controlling uric acid levels.
Hence, it’s better to opt for cold-pressed olive oil instead of using vegetable oil or butter in your cooking and baking. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats which remain stable on heating. Moreover, it is a rich source of vitamin E and antioxidants.
Take a Low Purine Diet :
Purines are the nitrogen-containing compounds which break down into uric acid, thus increasing the levels of it in the body. They are mostly found in animal proteins. Avoid taking animal proteins like meats, fish, organ meats and poultry as they are a rich source of purines. Other foods like legumes, mushrooms, yeast, and beans are high in purine and you can add them to your uric acid diet plan.
Dairy Products :
Low-fat milk and dairy products are linked with lower plasma urate concentrations and reduced risk of gout. The skim milk contains orotic acid which decreases the re-absorption of uric acid. This, in turn, promotes its removal through the kidneys.
Therefore, if suffering from the uric acid problem, you must drink one to two cups of skim milk in routine. The other option is to add low-fat yogurt and other dairy products in your diet.
Lemon Juice :
Though lemon juice has a high content of citric acid and it may seem that it will make your body more acidic. But, in actual, it produces an alkaline effect which helps to neutralize uric acid.
What you have to do?
Take a fresh lemon and squeeze out its juice into a glass of warm water. You must drink this healthy juice in the morning on an empty stomach. Continue doing this for at least few weeks.
Stay Hydrated :
Drinking plenty of water is another remedy for managing uric acid levels. This is because water helps to dilute the uric acid levels. This stimulates the kidneys to remove out the excess amount of uric acid from the body. You must drink eight to ten glasses of water throughout the day. Along with this, include more fluids and water-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet.
So, these are some of the simple natural remedies which are helpful in controlling the uric acid levels. Do regular exercise and maintain a healthy weight. You can also control uric acid by yoga. Moreover, taking proper diagnosis and treatment by a doctor is a must.
